February 3rd marks Women Physician's Day, also referred to as Women In Medicine Day, in honor of the first American woman to earn her medical degree, Elizabeth Blackwell, MD. Dr. Blackwell completed her degree in 1849. Dr. Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College. In 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler graduated from New England Female Medical College (now Boston University School of Medicine) as the first African-American Woman to earn a medical degree. The American Medical Association said it best:
"[This] day acknowledges the vital roles that female physicians play in patient care, medical research and leadership within the health care field... [Women's] expertise and dedication continue to shape the ever-evolving landscape of health care. This observance underscores the importance of fostering gender diversity and equitable opportunities in the medical profession, ensuring that the legacy of pioneering women physicians endures."'
